Opera Trash, etc.
Sunday, March 25, 2007
Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall
VNYC would like to thank everybody, around 120 of you, who joined us at Opera Trash, etc. The evening of sensual arias and sexy songs was a huge success, raising nearly $5,000 for sick and disadvantaged children in the tri-state area. Our corporate sponsors - Ogilvy North America. PepsiCo and Communicator Interactive - deserve special recognition for their support and generosity.
Sincere thanks to conductor and improvisor, Justin Bischof, and mezzo-soprano, Ariana Chris, who generously donated their time and phenomenal talent to our cause. Thanks also to the Canadian Chamber Orchestra of New York who made their inaugural performance at this event.
Opera Trash, etc drew upon themes of passion, sex and intrigue from popular operas and song cycles. Highlights included operatic arias from Bizet's Carmen, Debussy's Chansons de Bilitis and music by Kurt Weil. In a twist on operatic tradition, the program featured improvisations by Mr. Bischof, based on themes provided by the audience, which even included the theme song from "Beverly Hills Cop."
The post-performance party was held at Brasserie 8 1/2, where the audience had the chance to meet the performers while enjoying champagne and conversation.
VNYC would like to thank Melanie Hardman who was the mastermind behind this event, and to the rest of the Opera Trash, etc. team - Andrew Simpson, Damon Gorrie, Michael Andrewes, Penny Mapp, Jean Hayden, Kate McClure, Shannon Brown, Chadd Barksdale, Judy Vecchione and Mish Fletcher.
